Introduction to MetaTrader 5 (MT5) platform for PC
The essential components of the MT5 platform are shown below, along with a brief introduction to the different functions.
① Menu
There is a menu bar at the top of MT5. You can perform most basic operations from this menu bar. The menu is divided into the following:
- ‘File’: Use this option to add new charts, access data folders, log into trading accounts, etc.
- ‘View’: Mainly used to switch the display in MT5 or to show ‘Strategy Tests’ that are generally not used. The view section has various options like market watch, data window, navigator, toolbox, etc.
- ‘Insert’: Adds indicators, objects, and other technical analysis tools, expert advisors (EAs), and scripts to charts.
- ‘Charts’: Use this option to edit chart settings.
- ‘Tools’: Used to display the option interface for new orders and MT5 settings, as well as to launch the editor for MT5’s programming language (MQL5).
- ‘Window’: Used to arrange windows.
- ‘Help’: Displays the help interface, accesses the developer’s website (metaquotes), checks the version information, and performs other functions.
② Toolbar
Most operations can be performed from the ① menu, but some frequently used functions are displayed here as icons, allowing for fast operation.
You can also customize the Toolbar based on your preferences. There are three options within the Toolbar - Standard, Line Studies and Timeframes.
③ Market Watch
Check FX quotes in the Market Watch window or access different functions by switching between the tabs below.
Click ‘Symbols’ to check the bid, ask, high, and low of each currency pair. Go to ‘Details’ to view detailed data. The ‘Trading’ option displays a one-click trading panel, and in the ‘Ticks’ tab, you will find quote charts.
④ Navigator
In the Navigation section, you can switch between real and demo accounts and manage metrics, EAs, scripts, etc.
Indicators and EAs have been organized into folders. Double-click on an indicator or EA, or drag and drop the tool directly on the selected chart.
⑤ Charts
This section is where we can find the charts. In the lower part of the section, the displayed chart (including the minimized chart) is displayed as the options bar. You can select the chart by clicking on the options bar. You can also double-click on the options bar to maximize the chart or restore its original size.
⑥ Toolbox
In the Toolbox, you can use various functions by switching the options bar at the bottom.
There are different tools in the Toolbox, but we mainly use ‘Trading’ to manage positions and orders and ‘History’ to track trading records. In addition, we use the ‘Economic Calendar’ to check for economic indicators. Indicators developed by Metaquotes and code-based tools such as EAs can also be installed.
